Hyderabad, India (June 9, 2018): WRI India Ross Center for Sustainable cities and Toyota Mobility Foundation (TMF) in collaboration with Government of Telangana and Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL), supported by LTMRHL, IIIT, TiE & CII jointly launched the Station Access and Mobility Program (STAMP) Challenge on Saturday, a competition to seek possible innovative solutions to improve first- and last-mile connectivity to metro transit in Hyderabad, India.

In April, the United Nations General Assembly declared 3 June as World Bicycle Day, acknowledging the “uniqueness, longevity, and versatility” of the bicycle. For a long time now, the bicycle has been recognised as a sustainable mode of transportation that is simple, affordable, reliable, clean, and enhances urban mobility and access. The Assembly welcomed communities around the world to organise bicycle rides and other such events to promote physical and mental health and well-being, and develop a culture of cycling in society.

India’s 70 million hectares (MHa) of forest area is essential for livelihood security of communities living in and around forests. In addition to fuelwood, fodder, timber as well as non-timber forest produce, these forest areas also provide a wide array of ecosystem services. This includes biodiversity conservation, water supplies, as well as climate mitigation and adaptation, which contribute to India’s economic development. Sustainable management of forests is a national priority, as articulated by the National Forest Policy of 1988.

As the Indian government begins implementing its ambitious domestic targets to mitigate carbon emissions, Indian cities could play a crucial role. They could adopt action plans and aim to mitigate emissions roughly in line with the national government’s targets, said climate experts in New Delhi this month.
A key first step will be collecting data and creating city-level greenhouse gas emissions inventories and identifying hotspots, said Subrata Chakrabarty, a climate researcher at WRI India. This will help the government prioritize actions and strategies for climate mitigation.

WRI India worked closely with Bengaluru’s public bus operator in 2017 to improve services for commuters. The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is the sole operator of public buses in the tech-hub, catering to approximately 50 lakh passenger-trips daily. The fast-growing metropolis does not yet have a significant rail-based mass transit system, which makes the BMTC’s services all the more important.
