We are living in a world that needs to prepare for the impact of 1.50 warming of the planet. The climate risks to food security, livelihoods, water supply, human well-being are projected to increase with rise in temperature. The impact of 1.50 warming will be differentiated for regions as well as population groups (IPCC 2018). As we push our planetary boundaries, India faces the challenge of supporting 1.3 billion population on 2.4 percent of the total world’s land. Paying attention to food and land use issues is critical for India, given the global impact of India’s footprint on climate.

Similar to other countries around the world, Belgium is going through an energy transition. Even as it increases its shares of renewable energy, it is attempting to phase out its ageing nuclear power plants, which have suffered extensive outages in recent years. These outages – coupled with the challenges of shifting to alternate forms of energy – create a short-to medium-term risk to the security of electricity supply, particularly during winter months, when demand peaks are 15-20% higher than in the summer.

The objective of this convening was to hear from experts in Jharkhand on the climate challenges faced by the state and the energy solutions that need to be developed, keeping this context in mind.

Bangalore: On 5th November, the World Resources Institute India (WRI India) organized the “Energy for Development” conference in Bangalore to bring together civil society organizations, development institutions, energy enterprises, government agencies and investors working to improve access to reliable, affordable and sustainable sources of electricity to improve development outcomes. Despite India rapidly moving towards 100% electricity connections at household level, many service delivery institutions across the country continue to operate in the dark.

Electric mobility is grabbing attention globally. Leveraging this trend will bring multiple environmental and economic gains for India. Transitioning to electric mobility will require a carefully planned strategy that is comprehensive and cognisant of the local context. Keeping this in mind, WRI India partnered with the Center for Battery Engineering and Electric Vehicles (CBEEV) of IIT Madras to launch 'A Guidance Document on Accelerating Electric Mobility in India', with support from the Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation.
